An MLA for West Belfast since 2016, Gerry Carroll previously represented the Black Mountain electoral area on Belfast City Council where he described himself as "a thorn in the side, disturber of the political peace". A long-time socialist activist, he travelled to Edinburgh for the Make Poverty History protest, aged just 16. He studied politics at Ulster University and was president of the Students Union.

On the Ballot
A former Sinn Fein councillor, Monica Digney is one of seven Aontu candidates contesting the December 12 election. The pro-life republican party was formed in January. It is contesting the poll on an abstentionist ticket.
Paul Doherty is the organiser of the Foodstock festival which supports local foodbanks. He describes himself as a community activist. Earlier this year, he was a Local Government Election candidate for the SDLP and ran in the Black Mountain electoral area of Belfast.
Donnamarie Higgins is an activist and campaigner from West Belfast. The mum of three says she is a strong advocate for women's rights and is a member of the Belfast Feminist Network. The Alliance candidate is also vocal on issues of equality for the LGBT+ community. She has worked for Naomi Long MEP and Maire Hendron MLA.
Paul Maskey has been the abstentionist MP for West Belfast since the 2011 by-election, replacing then-party president Gerry Adams. A republican activist, he was first elected to Belfast City Council in 2001 and remained on the council until 2009. In 2007 he was first elected to the Stormont Assembly for West Belfast and was re-elected in 2011 before vacating his Assembly seat the following year.
A Belfast City Councillor since 1997, Frank McCoubrey has been Deputy Lord Mayor and High Sheriff of Belfast. Earlier this year, he topped the poll in the Court electoral area. Mr McCoubrey, who was formerly a member of the Ulster Democratic Party and then an independent councillor, joined the DUP in 2012. A member of the Ulster Political Research Group, he's well known throughout the Greater Shankill area for his community work.
