DUP stalwart Gregory Campbell was first elected to Londonderry City Council in 1981 where he represented the Waterside electoral area until he stepped down in 2011. He was also elected to the 1982 Assembly representing Co Londonderry and the Northern Ireland Forum for Political Dialogue in 1996. He was first elected as a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly in 1998 representing the East Londonderry constituency and served as the Minister for Regional Development in 2000 - 2001. He also served as the Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure in 2008 - 2009. He remained a member of the Assembly until he stepped down at the 2016 Assembly election. Mr Campbell has been the MP for East Londonderry since 2001.

Richard Holmes has been a member of the Ulster Unionist Party since 1991. The Managing Director of an Antrim based manufacturer, he serves on the Causeway Coast & Glens Council, representing the Bann electoral area.
Cara Hunter, who was elected as a councillor for the first time earlier this year, is deputy mayor of Derry City and Strabane Council, representing the Derg electoral area.
Chris McCaw was elected as a councillor for the first time earlier this year, representing the Causeway electoral area on the Causeway Coast and Glens council. An economic development consultant originally from Coleraine, he has lived in Germany, England and Dublin and joined Alliance in 2014.
Dr Sean McNicholl is one of seven Aontu candidates contesting the December 12 election. The Armagh native is living and working in East Derry as a GP registrar. The pro-life republican party was formed in January. It is contesting the poll on an abstentionist ticket.
Councillor Dermot Nicholl first entered local politics in 2011, when he was elected to the former Limavady Borough Council. The Sinn Fein Causeway Coast and Glens councillor represents the Benbradagh electoral area.
