Tom Elliott is seeking to retake the Fermanagh & South Tyrone seat he lost to Michelle Gildernew in 2017. He had won the marginal seat in 2015 after an electoral pact saw the DUP stand aside to allow him a free run against the Sinn Fein MP. The DUP has again stepped aside in support of Mr Elliott. The former MP previously represented the constituency as a councillor and MLA. Mr Elliott was the leader of the Ulster Unionist Party from 2010 to 2012. Prior to entering elected politics, he spent 18 years as a part-time member of the Ulster Defence Regiment and the Royal Irish Regiment.
The SDLP's Adam Gannon was elected as a councillor for the first time earlier this year, representing the Erne West electoral area on the Fermanagh and Omagh council. He is running after the party ruled out an election pact with Sinn Fein in the marginal seat.
Michelle Gildernew was first elected to Westminster in 2001. She lost her seat to Tom Elliott of the UUP in 2015 before retaking it two years later. The former Stormont Agriculture Minister was previously elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 1998. She stood down in 2012 before returning to Stormont in 2016. From The Brantry, Co Tyrone, she has three children and is from a prominent republican family. She recently supported John O'Dowd in his failed leadership challenge against Sinn Fein vice-president Michelle O'Neill.
Labour Party member and Lisnaskea woman Caroline Wheeler is standing as an independent after the party's National Executive Committee decided against running candidates in Northern Ireland in the December 12 poll. Ms Wheeler ran in May's council election in the Erne East electoral area. She says there is a role for her candidacy. "As the mother of a disabled son, I feel very strongly about the position of the 272,000 unpaid carers in Northern Ireland," she said.
