Aontú
Paul Brady is one of seven Aontu candidates contesting the December 12 election. The pro-life republican party was formed in January. It is contesting the poll on an abstentionist ticket.
Alliance Party
Patrick Brown has served as a Newry, Mourne and Down Councillor since 2014. The Alliance candidate, who was convicted of drink-driving, retained his council seat in May's local government election after topping the poll in Rowallane. He was a Northern Ireland Assembly election candidate for Alliance and currently runs his own company, as well as studying for a PhD in politics at Queen’s University Belfast.
Democratic Unionist Party
DUP candidate Glyn Hanna sits on Newry Mourne and Down District Council, representing The Mournes. He has been a councillor since 2014. He is the father of Diane Forsythe who was the DUP's Westminster candidate in the constituency in 2017.
Sinn Fein
Chris Hazzard has been the MP for South Down since the 2017 general election, when he defeated the incumbent, former SDLP leader Margaret Ritchie. A former Minister for Infrastructure, Mr Hazzard was co-opted to the Northern Ireland Assembly at the age of 27 to replace Willie Clarke in 2012. He retained his seat in 2016 when he joined the Northern Ireland Executive. The former MLA was re-elected at Stormont in March 2017 and became an absentionist MP three months later.
Ulster Unionist Party
Ulster unionist candidate Jill Macauley sits on Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Council, representing Banbridge. She was co-opted onto the council to replace Harold McKee after his election to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2016. She retained her council seat in May's local government election.
Social Democratic and Labour Party
SDLP candidate Michael Savage sits on Newry, Mourne and Down Council, representing Newry. He was co-opted onto the council in 2017 and retained his council seat in May's local government election. He recently spoke out over the decriminalisation of abortion in Northern Ireland.
