An Ulster Unionist MLA for Upper Bann since 2016, Doug Beattie is a former Royal Irish Regiment captain and a winner of the Military Cross, he joined the UUP in 2014 and was elected to Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon District Council. He recently ruled himself out of contention as the next UUP leader, endorsing former Royal Navy commander Steve Aiken when Robin Swann stepped down. During his military career he served in Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. He has written a best-selling memoir.

On the Ballot
Dolores Kelly was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly for Upper Bann in 2003. She lost her seat in the 2016 Assembly Election but regained it in 2017. She is a member of the Policing Board and served on Craigavon Borough Council from 1993 until 2010. She was elected as Mayor of Craigavon in 1999 - the first nationalist to hold the post.
Carla Lockhart has been an MLA for Upper Bann since the 2016 election. She was previously elected to Craigavon Borough Council in 2007, representing the Lurgan area. The DUP politician is seeking to win the seat left vacant by former MP and party colleague David Simpson, who announced he wasn't standing for re-election this year. Former Education Minister John O’Dowd was first elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2003 and topped the poll in the 2007 election. He temporarily took on the duties of Deputy First Minister in 2011 while the late Martin McGuinness ran in the Irish presidential election. The Sinn Fein candidate recently failed in his leadership challenge against Sinn Fein vice-president Michelle O'Neill. Mr O'Dowd was born in Lurgan and previously trained as a chef. He was a councillor for 14 years on Craigavon Borough Council.
Alliance candidate Eoin Tennyson is a councillor on Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Council, representing Lagan River since May's local government election. The 21-year-old is one of the youngest candidates standing in this election.
