Orfhlaith Begley became MP for West Tyrone at the age of 26 after a by-election in May 2018. The by-election was called following the resignation of the previous Sinn Fein MP, Barry McElduff, over a controversial social media video he posted of himself on the anniversary of the Kingsmills atrocity. A native of Carrickmore, Ms Begley is the first female MP to represent the constituency since its creation in 1997. A trained solicitor, she does not sit in the House of Commons. Her father Sean served 26 years as a Sinn Fein councillor on Omagh District Council.
