Sandra Duffy has served on Derry City and Strabane District Council since 2014, most recently retaining her seat in 2023 by claiming the highest number of first preference votes in the Ballyarnett district. She was also the Mayor of Derry in 2022-2023.
Social Democratic and Labour Party
Colum Eastwood has been the leader of the SDLP since taking over from Alasdair McDonnell in 2015. He began his political career with election to Derry City Council in 2005, and in 2010 became the city's youngest mayor at 27. The following year he was elected to the Assembly, a position he held until 2019 when he won a Westminster seat with a landslide General Election win, securing 57% of the Foyle vote.
Alliance Party
Rachael Ferguson was a Derry City and Strabane District councillor representing the Faughan DEA from 2019 to 2022, when she lost her seat. She served as the party's vice chair from 2022 to 2023 and is a board member at the Education Authority. The mother of two is also a director of the Tiny Tots community group and a board member of Strathfoyle Women’s Activity Group.
People Before Profit
People Before Profit councillor Shaun Harkin represents the Foyleside electoral area on Derry City and Strabane District Council, having been elected in 2019 and 2023. He was the campaign organiser for Eamonn McCann's successful election to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2016.
Independent
Dr Anne McCloskey was elected to Derry and Strabane District Council as an Aontú representative in 2019. She stepped down the following year, citing an opinion on Covid-19 that differed from the party. During this year's General Election campaign, she spent two days in prison in connection with an unpaid fine issued over a breach of Covid regulations. Initially sentenced to 14 days, she was released after the fine was paid. Last October, she was suspended from practising as a GP for six months over comments made relating to the Covid-19 vaccination programme. She has also threatened to sue the General Medical Council for £33m in response to its investigation into her conduct.
Democratic Unionist Party
Gary Middleton was co-opted to the Northern Ireland Assembly in April 2015 to replace Maurice Devenney and was subsequently elected in 2016, 2017 and 2022. Before being an MLA, he was elected to Derry City Council in 2011 and served as deputy mayor.
Ulster Unionist Party
Janice Montgomery was co-opted to Derry and Strabane District Council in January of this year. She was selected to replace Ryan McCready as the party's councillor in the Faughan area after he stepped down to take the position of chair on the Londonderry Port and Harbour Commission.
