This election will mark the fourth time Chris Carter has stood as an Independent General Election candidate for North Down. In 1995, he received 101 votes; in 2001 he won 444 and in 2005 he won 211. In 2012, senior judges at the High Court in Belfast ruled that a legal challenge to Northern Ireland's smoking ban brought by Mr Carter could not go before the Supreme Court. He had been involved in a four-year legal battle to quash his conviction for lighting up at the front of Bangor Town Hall in October 2007
