Former MLA and Derry City mayor Maurice Devenney is standing as an independent after resigning from the DUP earlier this year. He was co-opted to the Assembly in October 2014 to replace William Hay, but stood down five months later. He has been a councillor since 2005 and is on the board of Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners.

An SDLP councillor on Derry City Council since 2001, representing Waterside, Gerard Diver is a former mayor of the city. He studied history, politics and community economic development at Ulster University and has spent almost two decades in the community and voluntary sector in the north west, working in the areas of community development, community relations, youth work and training.

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood was elected to the Assembly in 2011 and sat on a range of committees including Environment, Education, Justice, Standards and Privileges and OFMDFM. A Shantallow councillor from 2005, he was appointed Derry’s youngest ever mayor at the age of 27. He joined the SDLP as a teenager before studying at the University of Liverpool.

Student Mary Hassan is a campaigner for LGBT equality and women’s reproductive rights. She recently completed an Erasmus year in Spain, having previously studied Mandarin Chinese and international finance in Shanghai. She has volunteered with youth groups and human rights organisations in El Salvador. At Queen’s, Mary has held executive positions in Business Club, Greens at Queens, Model UN and QUB SAFE. She works as a residential assistant and is a member of the Washington Ireland Class of 2014.

CISTA candidate John Lindsay is campaigning for a legal and regulated marijuana market. He says it would raise money through taxation that could then be used for education, healthcare and other public services. He also supports marriage equality and abortion rights.

Journalist Eamonn McCann is one of Ireland's most prominent social justice campaigners. A lifelong socialist and trade unionist, he is a member of the national executive of the NUJ and of the Northern Ireland committee of ICTU.He is chairman of the Bloody Sunday Trust, a member of Amnesty International and of the rail lobby, Into the West. Mr McCann has fought many election campaigns in the Foyle constituency.

First elected to the Assembly in 2004, Raymond McCartney has been deputy chairperson of the Justice Committee and Sinn Fein Assembly group leader. A former prisoner and hunger striker, he is also chairperson of Coiste na n-Iar Chimí, the umbrella group for ex-prisoners organisations. Mr McCartney has worked closely with Derry City Football Club on the proposed regeneration of the Brandywell Stadium and is also an Irish language activist.

An economic development consultant originally from Coleraine, Chris McCaw has lived in Germany, England and Dublin where he worked in sales for an IT company. He is a member of the IBD Patient Panel at Causeway Hospital, Coleraine. Since joining Alliance in 2014, he has been secretary of the East Derry Association and vice chair of Alliance LGBT.

Shantallow GP Dr Anne McCloskey has helped to found organisations such as the mental health facility Cunamh and Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum. She also sits on the board of Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin. Dr McCloskey has worked as a GP in the city for 30 years.

Martin McGuinness

Deputy First Minister since 2007, Martin McGuinness has been a senior member of the Sinn Fein leadership team for almost 30 years. He was elected to the Assembly in 1998 and has also served as Education Minister. A former IRA leader, Mr McGuinness was the MP for Mid Ulster from 1997 until his resignation on 2013. He has represented Mid Ulster in the Assembly since 1998, but has switched to Foyle for this election.

In 2012, Maeve McLaughlin replaced Martina Anderson in the Assembly and became chair of the Health Committee. Previously employed as manager of Glen Development Initiative, she was a member of Derry City Council for 11 years and was spokesperson on tourism, a member of the local District Policing Partnership and lead spokesperson on the North West Region Cross Border Group. Ms McLaughlin was active in student politics during her time at University College Galway.

Gary Middleton was co-opted to the Assembly in April 2015 to replace Maurice Devenney. He was first elected to Derry City Council in 2011 and served as deputy mayor. He was also elected to the new Derry City and Strabane District Council and appointed DUP Group leader in 2014.
